Hurricane Productions relaunches MySpace profile

In an effort to reach more people, clients, and family, Hurricane Productions redesigned and relaunched its MySpace profile page.

Designed entirely by Hurricane Productions' co-owner, lead DJ, and sole web designer -Strato Doumanis - the site promotes the interactivity of the company's DJ entertainment product.

You can find Hurricane Productions everywhere - At a venue on a Friday or Saturday night entertaining a wedding or Sweet 16, online on its brand new website, on YouTube, Facebook, MySpace and here on Blogspot.

Hurricane Productions used MySpace in 2003 as one of its original tools to reach a new audience. Since then, the company continues to use social networking tools to broaden its fan base.

Joseph "Biggie Grand" Saddler (born January 1, 1958 in Bridgetown, Barbados), better known as Grandmaster Flash, is an American hip hop musician and DJ; one of the pioneers of hip-hop DJing, cutting, and mixing.

Hurricane Productions co-owner Vincent Velasquez reflects on the company's five-year anniversary

Hurricane Productions has done so much for me.

It has given me the ability to enjoy college life and work a second job that I love just as much as DJ entertainment. But most of all, its given the the opportunity to reach out to so many different people in so many different places.

We've been all over New Jersey. We've entertained in Philadelphia, Atlantic City, New York, and Brooklyn. Our videos and music have been seen and heard all over this great country and even in the Netherlands. I've gotten phone calls from companies in Cleveland, Los Angeles, Phoenix and emails from people overseas. And all of this is from a company that worked its first party in a backyard in Morganville, NJ five years ago today.

I'll never forget that party - an eighth grade graduation for a friend's sister. Strato and I worked three days straight beforehand building a small music library and making sure my dad's speakers and amplifier set from the 1980s still had some juice in them. My dad drove us to the party (we were 16 years old) and we played music for four hours. Strato liked changing the CDs in our two five-disc changers and I fell in love with talking on the microphone. Strato became a DJ, I became an MC.

We didn't charge that family any money, but afterwards the mom came to us and handed me an envelope with a tip. I took half and Strato took half. Boom. A 50-50 partnership was born.

Last night Strato and I looked back on our entire collections of emails and reminisced about all the gigs and jobs we worked and all the different people in our lives.

On the entertainment side, we just keep growing. Everyday we make improvements to our product. Strato and I brainstorm and make things happen. Our talents are so diverse but at the same time, it is the secret ingredient that many have tried to copy and/or discover on their own.

We work long hours, but it is expected because we own and operate the company. But on top of that, we have to make it to your event energetic and fun. I've never complained about any event we've worked. Even one I showed up to with pink eye and a dent on my front bumper after a car accident!

In 2004 and 2005, we worked at a day camp in Manalapan and taught kids how to DJ on our amateur system. Every Friday the entire camp would gather in a large pavilion and listen to Strato play the Cha Cha Slide and watch me teach them new instructional dances. It was taxing work. Especially since another DJ company, a more experienced one, worked larger events for the camp. We were constantly criticized and put under a microscope.

Peers of ours would talk behind our backs and laugh every time we mentioned DJing. Even our own families doubted the company would survive once we entered college.

But here we are, five years later. And still working hard, still making a difference in people's lives. I don't know if many people are able to fathom how much of a responsibility it is on us to be accountable for family memories. Ten years from now, a Sweet 16 girls is going to look back on her video and remember how much fun she had. A bride and groom will always remember their first dance. All of that is captured in photos and video and Hurricane Productions is a huge part of making all of those memories happen in time.

Every party is unique to me and my passion for entertainment keeps each party fresh and new. I could work 52 weeks straight and entertain the same type of event, but it will always be different. Each week I'm greeted into a new family and make new personal connections.

It has not always been easy. We've gone through some hard times in our personal lives and in our family lives. Still, DJing and entertainment is always a release for me. I'll never forget having to wake up on a Friday morning to bury my grandmother in Brooklyn and then rush back to New Jersey to work a wedding. I was just 17-years old. I'll never forget going through a rough breakup with an ex-girlfriend and the next day having to work an engagement party for a young, happy couple. Sometimes we forget, myself included, that we are people too and we need the entertainment just as much as our clients.

One thing that really stuck out to me was the amount of charity and volunteer work we've done over the past five years. In year one and two, 2003 and 2004, we volunteered our small PA system to the Keansburg Library so that they could cut the red tape in front of their new building in style. And how did they celebrate? We played music and danced into the night.

We also entertained our high school's fundraisers for little or no money. We introduced varsity sports teams into the gymnasium for pep rallies, and provided music for two Walk-a-Thons.

Working for the Knights of Columbus in Sayreville in 2004-2006 always sticks out in my mind. We helped a man named Tom, a guy in his mid-forties in the National Guard, put together dances for his "Squires," or in layman's terms -- teenagers interested in the KOC. In early 2006 we found out Tom was deployed to Arizona and then to Iraq. We haven't heard from him since, but we hope the work we did for him touched the individuals he aimed to please.

This past year we donated our entire staff's weekend in the first week of April (and DJ companies know how valuable a Spring weekend can be) to Rutgers Dance Marathon. DM is a 32-hour event that raises money for the Embrace Kids Foundation in New Brunswick, NJ. Embrace Kids serves families with children that have blood and cancer disorders. This year, DM raised over $320,000. And thanks to contributions from our clients, we were able to make a $630.00 donation. Better yet, we're already signed on for next year.

Helping Dance Marathon and the Embrace Kids Foundation is a true sign of our company's maturity. We've gone from using a PA system for opening a public library to touching the lives of so many families in need in a critical time in their lives. Both are so important in their respective ways, but I get emotional thinking that we've grown so quickly to be able to staff a 32-hour, non-stop event.

Like my recently deceased grandfather said "Show me who your friends are, and I'll show you who you are."

The reason I mention that is because Hurricane Productions is not just Strato and myself. It is Ashley Best, Jon Brooks, Samantha Cella, DJ LaLima, Kyle Gries, Ed Romani, and Alex Rosenkranz. These are the people, no matter how big or small their roles are, that make this company work and work very well.

And even some of the people who came before them, like the Doctor of Style, Mike Mendez, have contributed to this company.

But most importantly, we have been able to grow these last five years because of the dedication our clients show us. We have so many repeat customers and return business. So many of our clients have become friends that constantly keep in contact with us. Their continued business is much appreciated. They trust us, and in return, we trust them tenfold.

We've labeled our company as "The business of building great entertainment." But I would argue, we're in the business of building great and everlasting relationships.

Hurricane Productions 5 Years Later; We've Had Some Haters

Today, June 19th 2008 marks the five year anniversary of Hurricane Productions LLC. That's right, 5 years ago today we entertained our first party. Getting involved in the mobile entertainment industry happened quite by accident for co-owner Vincent Velasquez and I. Sitting quite still one Wednesday afternoon in Mrs. Jaeger's English class (Saint John Vianney High School 05') I overheard a light conversation about an upcoming party. Turning my head slightly, the conversation began to take focus. They were talking about music.. and needing a DJ for an upcoming graduation party. As the conversation progressed so did my curiosity. Suddenly the exchange came to a pause and Vinny began to turn my direction. Quickly, I diverted my attention elsewhere to avoid being charged with eavesdropping.

To my surprise I feel a tap on my shoulder, "DAMNIT", I think to myself "They caught me listening in..".

"Hey Strato", Vincent starts "Kristen here is having a graduation party this weekend and she needs some music. I know you have a lot of home audio gear just like I do .. do you think we could throw something together and play some music for them?".

I think for a moment then respond, "Yea sure why not, I'm sure I could find some speakers and CD players."

From that moment on, something changed inside of Vinny and I and we didn't even realize it. In the instant we agreed to provide music for the graduation party, an entirely new dimension of ourselves was born. We were given a responsibility and a role we'd never filled before; it was uncharted territory for us but something about it felt right.

Despite the make-shift DJ setup and that we were in a backyard, all the elements that make up a great party still existed! Everyone was having a great time and we could feel an energy we'd never experienced before. Curious as to what we were using? Here's a glimpse at our origins:

Just look at those fancy speaker tripods! And WOW check out Hurricane 1.0's light show made up of a "party-city" strobe light and an equally as cheap police beacon! At this point your probably wondering what kind of crazy equipment we've got behind make-shift facade. Let's take a look:

Behind that aesthetically pleasing setup you would find two, 5-disc CD changers and a small Yamaha keyboard. As the party went on we would write down, on a piece of paper what CDs we had in each CD player. We had no mixer, only the ability to fade the volume on the master 5-disc changer and press the AUX button to kick in the other 5-disker. On the rare occasion that both CD changers needed new music we would switch over to the keyboard and have a generic beat playing the background simply to avoid dead-air while we loaded up the CD changers. We did a few parties like this before we could afford real DJ equipment; you gotta' start somewhere right?

Our setup is much more impressive now-a-days...

But I digress...

The real reason for this post is to reminisce about some funny incidents we ran into in the beginning. I'd like to share with you an email we received from a competing DJ, the same age as us at the time -- a mere 17 years of age. I've decided to pick this email apart and color code each ridiculous line I read. Each instance where I feel the writer sufficiently deviates from reality I will be linked to the bottom of this post sharing my insight about his carefully chosen words.

so hows it going Vince yea u got a nice setup...too bad Strato's the only real DJ in ur company...wanna be a tough guy? ill be around soon...be a tough guy to my face...and i know ur prolly showin this to eveyr1 cuz u think ur cool...and ur girls prolly gonna be all mad, ur fag boyfriend has nuthin better to do wit his life then try to be a dj... bro if you knew anything about makin websites, youd know it doesn't take one day to make..i was makin that site for months...i dont need to pay to get mine done...i will say this though...congrats on ur company, seems your doin aight...only difference between em and you is that 1) your only in it for the money, i do it for the love of DJing...and 2) id destroy you in a battle....pisses me off that ppl that just start their company spend all their money on shyt and get parties, and still charge liek 1000 for a party...nto even tryin to be a dick, but madd ppl either said you suck or you guys were aight, nothin spcial, i mean your sites not bad, not everyone can afford to pay professional web desingers..and that picture of Vinny with the sunglasses makes him look like aherb..that's just my opinion. ..one question...whats wit the keyboard? I know Strato knows how to play it, and trust me, it's not gonna be in any of my packages, but what do you do with it? And Strato I got no prob wit u, but Vince, pray people that didn't crack you in the face when you were a freshman and will definitely do it again. Find an activity to keep yourself busy. Oh and Strato, you been DJing for a while I know, I'm just wonderin how long you ... you probably started DJing in ur time frame around the same as me, i been for 4 1/2 yrs now...i never heard you DJ so i cant say id destroy you but i mean im pretty sick wit mixin man, not tryin to brag, but clubs was hoppin, i mean i do mainly hip hop and rap and i scratch too, not on the cd players cuz all cd players, even the best, sounds crappy when u scratch on them..i use technics...which is why i dont advertise for weddings much...i dont do many parties that much cuz i dont care about djing parties...most of my DJing is in my room..dont get me wrong, i get a few parties a month, but mainly school dances, teen dances, sweet 16s, things of that nature..you know, teen shyt,,,i get bored easy playin Earth Wind and Fire and going into like Heatwave or sum shyt, ... i;m out -peace lil f@gs

He was right! Vinny was an MC back then just as he is now. So that leaves all the rest of the company to which he was insluting... but Strato was the only other staff member..

Not everyone, only the people connected to the internet.

Again, Vinny if anything was trying to be an MC. Curious fellow, I know but wait it gets better

Here's another shocker -- Strato designed the entire HurricaneProductions.com from scratch.

No offense to the owners of this website, but just as an example --> this is what his website looked like at the time.

What?! We were charging a maximum of $250.00 a party!

B'cus thats how real DJs duke it out.

All of our equipment was either donated or given to us in the beginning, it was a while before we could afford to by serious equipment.

Somehow how he turned the tables on us.. he doesn't want Strato to play the keyboard in any of HIS packages. Strato feels discouraged.

I have no words for this one; no clue what hes talking about.

Too bad clubs aren't hoppin' like they used to be when we were seventeen years old.

Apparently this young man has never heard of the industry standard, pioneer's CDJ-1000 / MK2,3.

He gets bored going from Earth Wind and Fire into Heatwave. If I were him, and this is just me, I'd maybe go from Earth Wind and Fire to ..oh I dont know, Kool & The Gang? -- jusssst to shake things up a bit.

As crazy as that email was, it was stuff like that which actually motivated Vinny and I to pursue the mobile DJ industry. We always new we were better and could deliver a better product than any other mobile entertainer we'd seen, we just needed the opportunity.

Here's to another five years, and another five after that.

LED DJ Lighting: what's wrong with it and who's shakings things up?

LED DJ lighting has a ton of perks; extremely long life, low power consumption, no cool-down time, low heat, and they can be left on for hours and hours with no rest! As great as all of these perks are these lights lack one important factor THEY DON'T LOOK NEARLY AS GOOD AS HALOGEN LIGHTING! ... until now.

It's mid-June and the 2008 International DJ Expo is fast approaching, scheduled for August 11th-14th. Last year I discussed some new products that I was impressed by and a few products that let me down at the 2007 expo. Among those products were Chauvet's and American DJ's attempt at creating appealing DJ lighting with LEDs as a light source. The new LED products Chauvet and American DJ were introducing left me feeling happy that they were experimenting with the new technology, but also left me wanting more. More research, more development, and an overall better product.

This year will be different. Chauvet hasn't done much since the expo in 2007, releasing nothing new since the Vue LED series pictured to the right. The Vue series features some of the worst DJ lighting fixtures I've ever experienced. They are bulky, awkward, and produce a dim and unimpressive light show. American DJ, while their products weren't much better than Chauvet's in 07, is introducing something completely new and revolutionary in July 2008.

American DJ's X-Move. The X-Move's LED Hi-Tech Moving Head features a 20-Watt white LED source for a hard edge beam that will project gobos and solid colors. There is nothing else like it on the market and no company is using 20-watt LEDs for this application. Take a look at the video below to see the X-Move in action.

The biggest problem I previously had with LED lighting fixtures was the lack of tight, rich beams of color which until now could only be produced by a halogen bulb. The X-Move is changing all of that. The output of this unit is the closest LED technology has come to reproducing the beloved halogen lighting effect with a fraction of the power draw (44W) and without the hassle of replacing light bulbs. The X-Move LED is light weight and small in size making it extremely mobile and can be applied to nearly any size DJ setup.

As Scott Davies, General Manager of world renowned American DJ in Los Angeles, California said during an interview in September 2007:

Just like computer chips -they will get brighter, smaller and more affordable as volumes increase and more solutions become available on how to use LED's. Already there is talk about OLED (Organic LED) and other high efficiency luminance products...the future is bright and we are working with all the right partners to bring this technology to the market!

I look forward to seeing this new unit at the 2008 International DJ Expo, as well as what Chauvet and Martin plan on competing with. DJ Strato Releases New Remix: Get Busy Chico (Clean) - Sean Paul & Pitbull

On June 04, 2008 DJ Strato Doumanis released a new remix he's calling Get Busy Chico. The remix is a combination of Sean Paul's Get Busy and Pitbull's Ay Chico. The percussion found in Ay Chico compliments the lyrics of Get Busy very well and should bring a returning whim of popularity to Get Busy's catchy lyrics.

"Ay Chico (Lengua Afuera)" is the second single from El Mariel, an album by Cuban American rap artist Pitbull. It has currently peaked at number 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. It was produced by Mr. Collipark.

"Get Busy" is a 2003 re-released song by Jamaican dancehall reggae toaster Sean Paul, from his album Dutty Rock.
